Once an informal group is in place or a plan is in progress, foundations that might support the effort are not those that necessarily support literacy, but instead search for the following keywords: “social justice,” “grassroots organizing,” or “democratic participation.”

CARTHAGE FOUNDATION (OPEN)
The Foundation focuses its grant making on programs that will address public policy questions concerned with national and international issues.  There are no geographical restrictions. Initial inquiries should be in letter form signed by the organization’s president or authorized representative, and have the approval of the organization’s board of directors. The letter should include a concise description and budget for the specific purpose for which the funds are requested. HEADWATERS FOUNDATION FOR JUSTICE (06/01/07)
The Foundation supports grassroots organizations that address the root causes of injustice. Proposals are encouraged from people historically excluded from resources and power, such as people of color, women, poor and working class people, GLBT, low-income activists, and people with disabilities. The Foundation awards grants in four areas: Fund of the Sacred Circle, Democracy! Fund, Social Change Fund, and Environmental Justice Fund. THE LYNDE AND HARRY BRADLEY FOUNDATION (06/01/07)
Known for its support of conservative issues, the Foundation is currently focusing its efforts on cultivating a renewed, healthier, and more vigorous sense of citizenship among the people, both in America and worldwide.  Funded projects will seek to reinvigorate and re-empower traditional local institutions of families,schools, churches, and neighborhoods and encourage decentralization of power and accountability away from centralized, bureaucratic, national institutions and back to states, localities and “revitalized mediating structures,” such as voluntary associations, churches, schools, and neighborhoods.  Grant Range: $10,000 To $500,000 |  http://www.bradleyfdn.org/

 

 

NEEDMOR FUND (06/29/07)
The Fund’s objective is to empower those individuals whose basic rights to justice and opportunity are systematically ignored or denied. The Fund supports people who work together to change the social, economic, or political conditions which bar their access to participation in a democratic society. The Fund’s focus is community organizing. Applicants should be “multi-issue,membership-based, low-to-moderate income community organizations which show promise of creating significant social change by impacting the public or private institutions which influence their communities most profoundly.” The deadline is for applicants located out of the Southeast and Southwest Clustersof Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi,Arizona, southern California,New Mexico or Southern Texas. | Grant Range: $15,000 To $80,000 | http://www.needmorfund.org/

 

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic bishops.
